If you are considering a career in the Energy Efficiency sector, then now is a golden opportunity.

Solutions to the Energy Crisis

The soaring cost of energy bills compounded by poor energy efficiency of the UK housing stock is exacerbating the current energy crisis. There is an urgent need to reduce energy bills and increase energy security, which coincides with the governments high ambition towards net zero.

In a bid to address these problems in the short-term, the government is helping through cost-of-living payments and energy bills support. However, longer term solutions in the form of grants and funding schemes to help support the installation of energy efficiency home improvements, will ensure homes are warm and resilient to future price rises, whilst supporting net zero targets.

ECO4 Government Funding Scheme

The government has stated it wants existing residential property, be it privately owned or rented, to be Energy Performance certificate band C or above by 2028, a massive undertaking when 54% of the homes in England are still rated D or below for energy efficiency.

One of the schemes to help drive this forward is ECO, a government programme to support the delivery of energy efficiency measures into homes across the UK. ECO has been in place since 2013 and is responsible for the installation of around 3.5 million insulation and heating measures in 2.4 million homes. It is an established scheme and ECO4 is the latest iteration worth £4 billion.

Opportunities for Energy Professionals

Schemes like ECO4 are driving job growth across the green energy sector, calling upon more skilled professionals, such as energy assessors, retrofit assessors, retrofit coordinators and retrofit installers to help deliver home upgrades to millions of houses across the UK.

If you are new to the energy efficiency industry or already in the energy assessment or surveying business, with huge growth on the horizon, showing no signs of slowing, this is the perfect time to train as a Domestic Energy Assessors, Retrofit Assessor or Retrofit Coordinator.

To qualify as a Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA) you must complete Level 3 Certification in Domestic Energy Assessment. To qualify as a Retrofit Assessor, you must already be a qualified DEA and have completed Retrofit Assessor Training. To qualify as a Retrofit Coordinator, you must complete Level 5 Diploma in Retrofit Coordination and Risk Management. Once qualified you will need to join an Accreditation Scheme such as ecmk before you have a licence to operate under each strand.
